Ares in Greek mythology is painted as a violent fighter and most Gods tend to stay away from him. Mars, however, is portrayed more as a leader of legions in Rome; a role model. Still violent, yes, but not as rejected.

It depends on the period, really. Early Greeks painted more than they sculpted, so there are more representations of their gods on pottery and walls. The Romans didn't really do that. Their idols were usually in statue form, even when they were small.

There are many subtle differences between Greek and Roman art, and while most Roman art is an imitation of Greek art, there are some parts that remain different. Painting and sculpting people is one such area. The easiest way to think of it is that the Greeks preferred to produce an ideal artistic form while the Romans preferred realistic portraits.
