The word 'apostle' comes from the Greek word for 'messenger'. Christians believe that Jesus chose twelve of his disciples to be apostles, to spread his message. Paul was also an apostle.

Acts 1:22

22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

Notice Luke wrote in the Acts scripture above, "to be a witness with us." A true apostle lived during the time of Jesus, was baptized by John the Baptist, witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

II Corinthians 12:12

12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Christs' Apostles were performing the same wonders that the Savior Himself did. Heal the sick, blind, lame, raise the dead, etc.

Anyone claiming to be an Apostle of Christ today, has the same "divine powers" as the Apostles of Christ in the New Testament and if they don't, they are false apostles.

Mark 16

15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

19So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

20And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
