PRE-HISPANIC LEYTE
Archaeological findings show that there were already well-organized coastal communities in the island of Leyte, a century prior to the arrival of the Spanish colonizers. People in these communities had their own laws, customs, mores, and an armed group for protection against hostilities.
Ancient gold ornaments and ceramic pieces unearthed in what is now Ormoc City, prove that it was an economically prosperous Malayan village in the early 16th century. Carigara, a town in Leyte, had a functional, although crude, irrigation system. Hand tools were used to farm rice fields.
Ceramic pieces from the Ming Dynasty period, as well as Vietnamese and Thai artifacts found in Limasawa Island and other coastal communities in mainland Leyte prove that there was barter trade with China, Siam, Cambodia and Sumatra.
