It depends on the purpose for this statement and whether you could bear any legal risks in writing this "statement". You might want to consult your lawyer FIRST, before putting anything in writing. In fact, I'm not sure your prospective employer has any right to even ask you to write such a statement. Ask your attorney or parole officer, just to be sure.

IF you decide to go ahead and write it, ask the prospective employer what he/she wants you to include. Offer no other information. Do not add in a bunch of details; it really is not anyone's business after you served your sentence.

Keep it short, simple.

Dear Mr. (last name),

On (date), I was convicted of (the name of the legal charge - you do not need to list the "degree" of the charge). I was sentenced to (number) years / months. I have completed my sentence and all tasks I was required to do as part of my sentencing and release.

Thank you for considering me for employment,

(Signed your full legal name)

That all depends on the nature of the felony, and how long ago. IF the felony was a crime of domestic violence, then FEDERAL law prohibits you from ever possessing a firearm. If it was a violent felony or a felony involving a firearm in the past 20 years, no. Start by hiring an attorney- you will need one.

Can an accountant have a criminal record?

This is a response I received from the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing, the agency that licenses CPA's in Wisconsin. There is never a yes or no answer to the question you posed. When you apply for a license you have to disclose any misdemeanor or felony conviction on the application form. Your application would probably be brought before the Board for its consideration because of the conviction record. A number of factors would be reviewed by the board. They would start by looking at the conviction and the facts surrounding it. Other factors for consideration are: age when you were convicted, how long ago was the conviction, your record since that time, compliance with the terms of the sentence and how related the crime is to the accounting profession. I am sorry there is no real answer until the application process has begun. I suggest you look at the factors I gave above and decide for youself what you think. Also remember that once you take the exam you don't have to take it again. Things can change in the future even if you are denied now. Not exactly the response I was looking for, nor anyone else I would assume.
