Yes, swimming is a great way to lose weight, but only swimming 500 meters is not very much. Assuming that you have a 25m pool, it is taking you a minute and a half just to do one length. That is a long time.

I suggest that you push yourself really hard. Try to see if you can do 25m in 1 minute. Try giving yourself a time limit of 10 minutes to do 250m. If you find that you can do that, then try to do 500m in 20 minutes. Once you find that you can do 25m/minute easily (and for any amount of lengths) then try 25m/45 sec. (This would mean giving yourself 15minutes to do 500m) If you manage to do that, then you will half the time it takes to do 500m, so if you still have half an hour, you can swim 1 km instead. Then you will really start losing weight and your heart will become stronger and you will build a lot of muscle.

tip: This is a process, so it may take you a long time to be able to swim 1km in half and hour, but if you push yourself and try really hard, it will become easy for you. :)
