All the time. They will pretty much do anything to keep the focus on themselves--the focus of being in the light, in the right, being the good, decent, perfect, often mistreated yet still plucky and capable of transcending all of the horridness--you know, that sort of person. Narcissists are awful to be around. They're very good at what they do, just as if they were what they very might well be--a low grade of sociopathic. It's supremely difficult to come out from under one and maybe even impossible to come out unscathed.
The Defendent is "being accused", therefore defending one's self
The accused has the "presumption of innocence," but I'm not familiar with any requirement that they be free of hardship while defending themselves.
