Christ certainly sweat lots of perspiration and blood during the atonement. He even lost some more when he was nailed to the Cross. When the guards pierced his left side, the rest of his blood poured out, and then came water. Christ died of loss of blood and shortage of breath.

What is the name given by Christian theology to Christ's atonement for sin?

The Atonement is one word that encompasses three of the greatest things that Christ did for us: 1) He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane where he took upon himself the sins, pains, sufferings, temptations of all man-kind. 2) His Death on the cross. 3) His resurrection on the third day. These three events comprise the Atonement. It is only through the Atonement that we can become clean from our sins through His suffering in Gethsemane. We will also one day all be resurrected because He was. This word is widely misunderstood, but should be a word that has meaning deep in the hearts of every follower of Christ, and really the whole world, whether you follow Christ or not, because it affects us all. Through the Atonement we can become clean from our wrong doings, sins. We can repent and literally have them washed away as if they never happened. But this gift is not free. It requires that we give ourselves to Christ, follow him, and shun sin. If we are willing to do what he has asked (have faith in him, repent of our sins, be baptized in his name, receive the Holy Ghost, and persevere to the end) we can receive the greatest of all the gifts of God, Eternal Life -- To live with Him again.

What are the significances of the shed blood of Jesus Christ?

The theme of blood sacrifice as the atonement for sin goes right back to the beginnings of the Bible. "The wages of sin is death". Jesus, being the perfect sacrifice, was enough to carry the sins of every person who has ever and will ever live. Talk about overkill, Satan never saw that one coming when he had God's son killed. Never play God at chess, you wouldn't believe the way his mind works.

Do Mormons believe you have to shed your own blood to be forgiven for certain sins?

No.AnswerBrigham Young the successor to Joseph Smith clearly taught that they do. On March 16, 1856 he delivered instructions to Bishops which included the following statement: "There is not a man or woman, who violates the covenants made with their God, that will not be required to pay the debt. The blood of Christ will never wipe that out, your own blood must atone for it; and the judgments of the Almighty will come, sooner or later, and every man and woman will have to atone for breaking their covenants."(Emphasis not in original)Source:"Brigham Young Blood Atonement Sermon," Journal of Discourses, Volume 3, Pages 243 to 249.Answer:While it is clear the Brigham Young did say this, in 1978, a statement from the Church said that the doctrine of Blood Atonement is not in force. An explanation from Church Apostle Bruce R. McConkie that same year said that Blood Atonement is only applicable in a Theocracy, and therefore should not be practiced today. The statement says: You note that I and President Joseph Fielding Smith and some of our early church leaders have said and written about this doctrine and you asked if the doctrine of blood atonement is an official doctrine of the Church today. If by blood atonement is meant the atoning sacrifice of Christ, the answer is Yes. If by blood atonement is meant the shedding of the blood of men to atone in some way for their own sins, the answer is No. We do not believe that it is necessary for men in this day to shed their own blood to receive a remission of sins. This is said with a full awareness of what I and others have written and said on this subject in times past. In order to understand what Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Charles W. Penrose and others have said, we must mention that there are some sins for which the blood of Christ alone does not cleanse a person. These include blasphemy against the Holy Ghost (as defined by the Church) and that murder which is the unlawful killing of a human being with malice. However, and this cannot be stressed too strongly, this law has not been given to the Church at any time in this dispensation. It has no application whatever to anyone now living whether he is a member or a non-member of the Church. This quote comes from a 1978 letter written by Elder McConkie, a copy of which can be found at the "Related Links" below.A handful of fundamentalist groups are known for practicing Blood Atonement, most noteably the LeBaron group, called "The Church of the Lamb of God." They have been accused of murdering several who apostasized from their group in the 1980's.

When did the Catholic Church absolve the Jews of killing Christ?

The Catholic Church is incapable of absolving the Jews of killing Christ as they were no more responsible then every other human being who has ever lived. Every person (besides Our Blessed Lord and His Mother) have sinned, and with every sin we are responsible for Christ's death. Pope Paul VI issued a declaration during the Second Vatican Council repudiating the belief that the Jews are collectively responsible for Christ's death.

What is justification by faith accordind to Ellen white?

If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:1, 2."As the penitent sinner, contrite before God, discerns Christ's atonement in his behalf, and accepts this atonement as his only hope in this life and the future life, his sins are pardoned. This is justification by faith. Every believing soul is to conform his will entirely to God's will, and keep in a state of repentance and contrition, exercising faith in the atoning merits of the Redeemer and advancing from strength to strength, from glory to glory."{RC 74.2}---Reflecting Christ by E.G.W.

What is the difference between propitiation and atonement?

Propitiation is the work Jesus did on the cross to appease and satisfy God's wrath so He would be able to pardon sinners who trust in Christ. Atonement - Used in the Old Testament means to cover. The Hebrew word is "kaphar" also "kippur". The same word is used for pitch, when Noah built the ark, see Genesis 6:14. Israel as a distinct nation was required every year to offer the blood of an animal for the sins of the nation on the day of atonement or "yom kippur", see Exodus 30:10. The difference is the death of Jesus Christ was a propitiation for our sins not just a covering. The old repetitive system required under the Mosaic law was done away with and a new covenant was established. The shedding of Christ's blood satisfied once and for all time the wrath of God, which no animal's blood could ever do. See Hebrews chapter 10. Mar 10:45 KJV For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.Rom 6:23 KJV For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."For He [God the Father] made Him [Jesus Christ] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (2Cor 5:21 NKJV)1Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.Using atonement in place of propitiation as seen in some modern versions of the bible renders the death of Christ a perpetual sacrifice which it is not, it was a one time event. Two different translations of the same verses:-Rom 3:23-25 KJV For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; [verse 24] Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [verse 25] Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;Rom 3:23-25 WEB for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; [v. 24] being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; [v. 25] whom God set forth to be an atoning sacrifice, through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness through the passing over of prior sins, in God's forbearance;
