Generally speaking, and this the best that can be offered without greater detail, it is not automatic. If the abuse that is alleged is sexual by the father and the mother is alleged to have not protected the child, it is a little more likely, but still not automatic.
The mother will be required to maintain a relationship, possibly supervised, with the child. The best course of action the mother can take is to enlist the assistance of an attorney beforetermination proceedings begin. Also, do everything advised by the case worker, be that parentingclasses, counselling, etc.
Most importantly, if the mother and father still have contact, via letters or telephone, notify him that he will be on his own for a time, at least until after her parental rights are settled. This is critical. I am not advising to end the relationship. Never throw family away. You may not be able to allow him back into the child's life, but family is family.
You may not understand everything now. It will become clearer as you go. Learn everything you can, become an expert.
