They are averaged to live 6 to 8 years, but my dog currently is 10 years old! And a 2 months, she was born in May. They do have history of hip problems and heart problems, both which can be helped now-a-days.

The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America did a survey of Bernese owners and found the average age of Berners in 2000 was 7.2 years. Other databases indicate the average lifespan is 6-8 years. This short lifespan is due to the serious health issues this breed faces including cancer (very common), hip, elbow and joint problems, and bloat (gastric torsion). While some Bernese Mountain Dogs can live to 10 or 12 years of age (or longer), just as many die in early adulthood. Given the wonderful temperament of this breed, it is sad that they live such relatively short life. I had one and it lived 11 years old

Whether you get it from a breeder or not it depends on the individual health of the dog.
