Yes, is there an attic? Or the roof can be raised. Or try putting in skylights to help brighten the area and make it feel more open.
ANSWER
Raising ceilings is something I've done a number of times. If you can't cut into the attic for some reason (like trusses), then you may have to actually raise the entire roof section. During remodels I have jacked up the roof and inserted either a short "pony wall" or 12" microlam on top of all of the walls to bridge the new gap. I have also lowered the floor to give extra height to first floor rooms.
