If you live in Michigan and are behind on several credit cards and own a small business which has been slow and you are about 45 thousand dollars in debt what is the best way to handle it?

From what you say you owe a total of $45,000 to all sources; c/cards, business suppliers, maybe the landlord etc. $45,000 is not a whole lot of debt for a business owner. If your business is not generating a real after-tax and debt repayment profit of more than $45,000/year you might consider getting out of the business and filing for bankruptcy. This would spread the debt out so you could make smaller payments over a longer period of time while working a job for someone else. The reason I say this is you can pay down $45,000 in a few years working many regular-type jobsand recover your credit to try again later.
Another possibility (if you want to keep your business because you are 100% sure it will improve for clear and specific reasons withing the next 6 months) ...is if you have equity in your home-to consolidate your debt as a second mortgage, pay ALL your credit debts and business debts and wait for those clear and specific improvements to get pay down the second mortgage.
In short, if your income is less than your outgo AND you have debt too then it is time to either defer the debt and go to work for someone else or pay down debt with equity from assets (house, business equipment, building etc.) and make more sales with your business. Hope that helps
