The name 49ers harkens back to the gold rush in the mid 1800's when people were migrating west in search of gold. The Gold Rush, as it was called, began in 1849 so often the people heading out that way were called 49ers. The team took it's name from those people, and it is often thought that their gold helmets are a reflection of the Gold Rush itself.
yes
California.
The earliest pioneers came to California to ranch and farm. The largest wave of pioneers came during the California Gold Rush of 1849. After the Civil War, pioneers came to California to farm, ranch, prospect, mine, timber, and every other occupation.
There were several ways. Miners worked the streams with gold pans and rockers, dug out mines, and did hydroelectric mining with water.
Very few of the "49'ers" - the people who went to California in 1849 and the following couple of years - ever struck gold and got rich. Most of them became merchants or farmers or ranchers, and their descendants still live here in California for the most part. Some people DID get rich, not by MINING gold, but from selling things that the miners needed.
