What did the flooding do for the farmers in ancient Egypt?

Floodings were very important for the farmers after they had learned how to use it. They dug canals from the river to their fields, and where the canals began, they built gates and with this irrigation system they gradually learned how to make use of the river and how to make their lands fertile. The Nile flooded its banks in July and left fertile silt on the fields. When the growing plant needed water, they opened the gates and the water flowed down the fields. They also used the shaduf, a tool for lifting water to the higher areas.
