psaltery is a musical instrument in medieval times
=========================================================
Answer: The psaltery was an ancient stringed instrument of the harp or Zither family; it was used in Biblical times and continued throughout the medieval period.
12th century English examples are commonly termed "pig-snout psalteries" because of their distinctive shape; they had a wide, flat sound-box with sound holes cut into the top surface and many graduated strings stretched between pegs. They were commonly played on the lap using two quill plectra (one in each hand). The sound produced is very pleasing - not loud but sweet and melodic.
Psalteries played with a bow are much later (post-medieval).
