For free to play, you are pretty much limited to either a Rune Longsword or a Rune 2h. In P2P, depending on your strength or attack levels, a Dragon Longsword or Granite maul is probably a good choice.

Here are weapon statistics, not according to the metal, but overall.

Melee

Dagger: Fastest attack speed, low amount of damage, medium accuracy.

Scimitar: Medium attack speed, high damage, low accuracy.

Longsword: Medium-Slow attack speed, high accuracy, high damage.

Mace: Slow-Medium attack speed, medium-low accuracy, high damage.

Battle-Axe: Slow attack speed, medium-high accuracy, high damage possibilities.

Two-Handed Sword: Slow attack speed, medium-high accuracy, high damage.

*Claws: High attack speed, high accuracy, low damage. Two-handed.

I am not going into more depth on an answer like this, seeing as there is no need to include weapon details you'll find out more within the game.

Range

Longbow: High accuracy, high damage, medium fire rate.

Shortbow: Low accuracy, high damage, high fire rate.

Well that depends if you're a member or not, if you are a member then I would recommend either the dragon scimitar or the dragon longsword. the dragon scimitar hits faster but the longsword hits slightly higher and has a better special attack. If you are not a member then I would recommend the rune scimitar.

Usually you should use the best weapon accessible. Which is the best weapon depends on whether you are a member or not, on your levels (especially your attack level), and on how much money you want to spend.

It all just depends on what your stats are. A Rune Kiteshield has no use for a Strength Pure or a Rune Sword for a Strength Pure.
