This is actually the part the hit hard to me. It shows you how bad it got and all the broken promises. He eventually says that the only one he can really trust is Hitler because at least he kept all his promises (as far as elie knew at the time). Remember promises arent always good and it just simply means something they guranteed would happen, actually ends up happening.

In the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel, the only Jew who kept his promise was Akiba Drumer. He promised to say Kaddish, a prayer for the dead, for himself and others, but eventually lost faith and was sent to the gas chambers.
