Each season is 3 months. They are defined by the summer & winter solstices, just as spring & fall are defined by the equinoxes. The Earth's axis is tilted. As it swings around the Sun, the sun appears to rise a little higher (or lower) in the sky each day. At it's highest point is the summer solstice. - This is where the northern pole is pointing the most toward the Sun. It is also where the southern pole is pointing the most away from the sun. Therefore, that is the beginning of winter in the southern hemisphere. Logically, you might think that this should be the middle of a season and not the beginning. Two things say "NO" to this. The first is tradition. The second has more to do with the heating and cooling of the earth. It takes time for the earth to heat & cool, so our weather (temperatures, etc.) lag behind the relative position of the Sun in the sky.
