My father attended a school like the one you mention. The teacher would build the fire before the students arrive. The community would supply firewood for the school- sort of a direct tax. Older students would gather kindling wood- especially what was known as "lightwood"- a resin loaded bit of a pine knot. These would light very easily, and burn quite hot- great fire starters.
