No, he has never been poor. On the other hand, compared to many well-known politicians, he has never been rich either. Mr. Obama was raised in a lower-middle class environment. He was the son of a single mother who was a college student-- his father left when Barack was about two, and he only saw his dad one other time. His maternal grandparents helped to raise him, but even when their financial situation improved and his mom finished her degree, the family would generally have been considered solidly middle class.

Years later, in about 2006, Mr. Obama finally became a millionaire, thanks in large part to sales from his best-selling books, and helped by his wife's salary as a hospital administrator. These days, thanks to his salary as president as well as his investments and royalties from books, most sources would say he is in the upper socioeconomic class, although he is certainly nowhere nearly as wealthy as, let's say, Warren Buffett or Mitt Romney.
