Both Betelgeuse and Rigel are listed as being only 10 million yeas old, compared to the sun's 4.5 billion. Both are also expected to supernova soon, though Betelgeuse is expected to go out sooner, as it's been anticipated since 2011.

Which was discovered first Betelgeuse or Rigel?

Betelgeuse and Rigel are both in the top 10 brightest stars in the sky. They have been seen bright in the sky even since cavemen looked up. So, they were discovered about the same time.

Why does Rigel have the designation beta Ori when it is a brighter star than Betelgeuse?

Answer When Bayer prepared his catalogue, there was no way to measure stellar brightness precisely. Traditionally, the stars were assigned to one of six magnitude classes, and Bayer's catalog lists all the first-magnitude stars, followed by all the second-magnitude stars, and so on. However within each magnitude class, there was no attempt to arrange stars by relative brightness. For example, in the Orion constellation, Bayer first designated the two 1st-magnitude stars, Betelgeuse and Rigel, as Alpha and Beta, with Betelgeuse (the shoulder) coming ahead of Rigel (the foot), even though the latter is the brighter. Also worth mentioningis that Betelgeuse is a semiregular variable star, and sometimes IS brighter than Rigel. So, it is possible that Betelgeuse was mistakenly classified as the brightest because it could have been experiencing an increase in brightness at that time.

Who discovered Rigel?

Rigel has been visible in the night sky for over 8 million years. It would have been seen by the first creatures who looked up into the night sky. So no one can be said to have discovered Rigel.

What are facts about Betelgeuse?

Betelgeuse is the eighth brightest star in the night sky and the second brightest star in the constellation of Orin. It is classified as a Red Giant. Astronomers believe that Betelgeuse is only 10 million years old, but has evolved rapidly due to its high mass. Betelgeuse is made from: Helium, Carbon, and Oxygen. Astronomers don't know when but they are sure that Betelgeuse will explode and become a SuperNova. Betelgeuse is 700 million miles in diameter and the surface temperature is 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Its luminosity is about 10,000 times the Sun and it's the first star to be directly imaged by a telescope. Finally Betelgeuse is visible in winter skies from the Northern Hemisphere in the constellation Orion. Hope that Helped You :)

How did Betelgeuse form?

Just like any other star. . .First he had to get discovered, and then he had to find a really good agent.

What is true of alpha star in a constellation?

The standard designations of stars within a constellation is a Greek letter followed by the Latin name of the constellation. This is called the "Bayer designation". In general - but not in EVERY case - the stars were lettered in order by brightness. Please remember that this was done a few hundred years ago, before the invention of detailed electronic instruments. And over the centuries, in a few cases the stars themselves have varied in brightness. For example, in the constellation of Orion, the star Betelgeuse is "Alpha Orionis", even though it is the SECOND-brightest star in Orion. Why the discrepancy? A couple of reasons, perhaps. Rigel, the brightest star in Orion, isn't all THAT much brighter; both are "first magnitude" stars. Second, Betelgeuse is known to be a variable star, and 300 years ago we believe that Betelgeuse was actually brighter than Rigel is.

What does vega and rigel mean?

Arabic, a Male name for Foot. Rigel is a blue star of the first magnitude that marks the hunter's left foot in the Orion constellation.

What star comes out first?

The "first star" may well be a planet; either Venus or Jupiter, depending on the time of year. In the winter, the brightest stars in the Eastern sky, where it gets dark before the setting sun has completely faded, are Rigel and Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion, or Sirius, which rises about an hour later. During the summer, the "first star" may be Vega, especially if it is very high in the sky; almost right overhead.

Who made the gummy bear?

Hans Rigel invented the "Gummy Bear" . It was the first gummy candy made. It was made during the 1920's. Rigel was the owner of the German candy company "Haribo"

When was the star rigel first seen?

By very ancient people - and it was particularly important then because it was the Pole Star.
