I believe it was just an act of cowardice because he did something wrong and now he wants to make sure he could never look into the eyes of the people he loved again when they met again in the after life. its all his fault that he did what he did and he can seem to face it

She commits suicide once she realizes that her beloved second husband Oedipus is none other than her son from her first marriage with Theban King Laius. When Oedipus finds Jocasta dead, he takes the brooches from her robes and stabs himself in both eyes. But Oedipus' actual, natural death is not covered until the subsequent play "Oedipus at Colonus."

What did Oedipus do after he found out Jocasta was his mother?

Jocasta discovered the truth before Oedipus, and she proceeded to commit suicide. Oedipus, seeing the truth and a dead wife-mother, blinded himself with her broaches(pins). He chose not to kill himself for two reasons: so he would not have to face the people of Thebes and see their disappointment in him, and so he could carry out the same punishment he mentioned before: exile.

How can 'Oedipus Rex' be summarized?

Theban King Oedipus wants to know how to free his city of a plague. Creon, his brother-in-law and uncle, consults with the Delphic Oracle. The Oracle says that the plague results from the unsolved murder of previous Theban King Laius. The Oracle also tells Creon that the murderers must be found and banished from Thebes. But according to Teiresias the blind prophet of Thebes, Oedipus himself is the murderer. Oedipus subsequently finds out that although he had believed himself to be the son of King Polybus of Corinth he actually was the son of Laius whom he had killed in self defense. Moreover, Oedipus' marriage to Jocasta, Creon's sister and Laius' widow, was also the marriage of Oedipus to his own mother. When this truth is revealed to both Jocasta and Oedipus, Jocasta commits suicide and Oedipus blinds himself and is led into exile.

What is the plot of Oedipus?

Thebes is afflicted by a bad harvest, and Theban King Oedipus wishes to know why. His brother-in-law and uncle Creon is sent to the Delphic oracle to find out why. Creon returns with the news that the murderers of previous Theban King Laius still are unpunished. As long as the perpetrators remain unpunished the blight shall continue. Oedipus then decrees that the murderers, whoever they may be, shall be banished from Thebes. He even invokes banishment on himself, should his house be accessed by any of the murderers. Then the blind prophet Teiresias is guided by a boy into Oedipus' presence. At Oedipus' insistence, Teiresias reluctantly declares that Oedipus himself is the murderer. Moreover, he describes Oedipus as living in sin with 'thy nearest kin'. Finally, he predicts that Oedipus shall end up being a blind beggar. Then Jocasta reveals that Laius had been murdered at a crossroads. She also tells of a son whose ankles Laius pinned together and whom he abandoned when the boy was only three days old. Oedipus finds out later that the boy is himself. When he and Jocasta learn the whole truth, Jocasta commits suicide and Oedipus blinds himself and is led into exile.Oedipus kills his father and marries his mother.
