The two major mountain ranges in Poland, which contain a lot of smaller ranges, are Carpathians (Pol. Karpaty) in the south-east and Sudetes (Pol. Sudety) in the south-west. There is also a smaller range in central-southern-eastern Poland called Holy Cross Mountains or Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Pol. Góry Świętokrzyskie). The highest mountains in the country are Tatras (Pol. Tatry) located on a relatively tiny area in Carpathians.

The highest range is the Tatras, whose highest peak on the Polish side (in fact on the border between Poland and Slovakia) is Rysy - 2499 meters above sea level. Some of the other high peaks are Świnica, Zawrat, Kościelec, Starorobociański, Czerwone Wierchy (a range of 4 peaks, each above 2000 meters), two best known and most often visited are Kasprowy (1987 m.) and Giewont (1895).

In other mountain ranges some well-known peaks are Babia Góra in the Beskidy [Beskids] range, Śnieżka in Sudety [Sudetes], Trzy Korony in Pieniny, Tarnica in Bieszczady. These, however, are considerably lower than the Tatras (maybe with the exception of Babia Góra, which is 1725 m. and supposedly difficult to climb).

Most of the Northern part of the country is gently rolling plains that are hilly in spots but much more low-lying in general, similar territory to northern Germany and Denmark. It gets much hillier in the South Central and Southern parts of the country.
