I think the extra bells and whistles slow the XP system down and actually degrade performance; a gimic for marketing, sakes "churning" or designed obsolescence, "everyone has to have it".
Windows Media Center isn't part of Windows XP Professional. It was only available in Windows XP Media Center Edition.

I don't think XP pro has anything that Media Center does not. I installed Media Center recently and the install refers to XP pro in a number of places. I believe Microsoft built Media Center from XP pro by just added features.
