Originally yes, the model now known as the Defender was originally designed and produced by the Rover Motor Company, the first Range Rovers were designed by them but didn't go into production until after the company lost its independence. All the later models however such as the discovery are nothing to do with the original company, which was effectively dismantled in the early 1970's and used as a name for vastly inferior products to those produced by the company up until the late 60's. The famous v8 also dates back to the Rover company era, it was they who acquired it from the US.
