Our band is pretty small but we have 2 bass clarinets so yeah, bass clarinets are in marching band.

Yes, they are in marching band. I have a marching band of 209 and we have 3 Bass Clarinet marchers. I will be marching next year. I currently play Clarinet. But don't worry, when I was in 8th grade I didn't know that they were in marchin band.

It is possible for bassoon players to march, and I have done it, myself.

The bassoon is most often played sitting, with a belt hooked to the bottom of the instrument which the player sits on to support it. However, many bassoons have been made with a metal loop braised to the wide metal band at the top of the butt joint, which can be used with a neck strap to suspend the instrument. Usually, when carried in this manner, a rest, which fits under the palm of the right hand, is employed. This rest has a post which is placed in a post-holder which is screwed to the bassoon's butt joint so that the player's right thumb can rest on the Bb key, his little finger is poised comfortably to reach the F and G# keys, and his index finger can reach the B key without strain.

When the neck strap and right hand rest is used, the remaining weight/balance falls to the balls of the first two fingers of the left hand. There is a lyre arrangement which involves a metal loop with a screw-tightener, which secures it to the metal band at the top of the wing joint (where the bocal enters the wooden body.) Frankly, this places the music where it does little more than blind the musician, so most of the bassoonists I've known who march will just memorize their music.

As an addendum, there is nothing that draws bees and wasps faster than the vibrating lips of a bassoon player, especially when he/she is standing in formation playing the National Anthem, and cannot move!

Yes it can. Any instrument can be a marching instrument. The sizes can be a bit difficult to manage but they can be marched. A Bassoon produces a great sound and would be a great addition to the low section of any marching band. The marching band i play in has 2 bassoons in it.

It is possible for a bass clarinet to be in marching band, however, it is usually the band director's preference whether or not to allow bass clarinets in their own bands.

How do you play loud on a bassoon?

Playing "loud" on the bassoon is all about air support, a good embouchure, and a good reed. You can't play loud if any of them are missing. Typically when bassoon players play loud they want to drop their jaw which causes them to go flat, especially on the low notes, so be sure not to do much change to your embouchure. Loud on the bassoon is mainly caused by air support. A good air stream with plenty of pressure and wind will cause you to play "loud" on the bassoon.

What do you call a person that plays the bassoon?

Typically the double bassoon (or contrabassoon) is given to the third or fourth chair bassoon, leaving the principal bassoon to play the 1st bassoon part and the 2nd chair bassoon to play the 2nd bassoon part. In some cases the double bassoon part is an auditioned spot, meaning that someone specifically auditioned for the double bassoon.
