The best thing to do is to do what makes you more comfortable. If you are intimidated by other smart people because they might know more than you, then choose the people who are not as smart as you. But think about this. Maybe you intimidate them as well. But sometimes hanging out with people who are less smart than you con be more fun. But try not to choose your company by how smart they are and try to go by who is the best influence and who you have the most in common with. But don't underestimate people you think are least smarter than you because they might have something they can teach you.
