Is it normal to bleed bright red with blood clots the day after having your IUD removed?

My Story:
I had mine removed last Tuesday. No spotting or cramping. After a few days, started what seemed to be a period. But it didn't get any lighter, and blood stayed quite red. A week later, passed a terrifying amount of blood clots (literally about the size of a dinner plate), and continue to bleed heavily. 8 days after removal, soaked a super tampon and the back up pad in less than 20 minutes. This is incredibly abnormal for me. The doc said to start taking BC pill and should help regulate everything.

∙ 9y agoBrown bleeding is not unusual after IUD removal, particularly after removal of Mirena. The hormones in Mirena may change the color and timing of bleeding. Your regular period should arrive within four to six weeks. Remember that the color of menstrual flow has no clinical significance.

∙ 10y agoIf you were on a hormonal IUD, your period will be heavier after it's removed. You may have some bleeding on the day of removal, but this should be no heavier than a period and should not last longer than a day (normally just for a few minutes).

∙ 8y agoYes, that is common. The brown discharge may be due to a slight disturbance of the uterine lining (the part that sheds with your period) during the removal, or (if you were using Mirena or Liletta or Skyla) resumption of your body's own cycle.
