Can you take 10mg of methadone and 1mg of xanax 12 hours apart and be safe?

It is working for my mother, a doctor prescribed 2 methadone 5mg pills every 8 hours and 4 .5mg xanax a day. I asked the pharmacist if there was an interaction and they said no, it could just make her a little tired or sleepy. My mom is doing good on the combination.

Yes, but you must obtain a letter from the doctor prescribing benzo's (xanax, klonopin, Ativan, etc.) stating that she/he (the dr.) is aware you are under methadone treatment AND that you are also prescribed the benzo. You must inform the prescribing dr. and have them make these 2 statements in the form of a letter for your clinic. You will also have to take your bottle of xanax in each month so they can record it. This information is for those who have a valid prescription for the benzo.

Add: You can take methadone and xanax at the same time but it is highly dangerous and not recommended by almost all physicians. The only reason you would be taking Xanax while on methadone is if you are SEVERELY depressed or suicidal. Of course there are some other circumstances, but they must outwiegh the high risk of death associated with mixing these two narcotic medications.
