They are both! Most of the chickens in the super markets are raised especially for meat use and grow so fast (heavy) that they are useless for breeding or pets. They are generally crosses between cornish and rock breeds. The roosters may reach market weight a few weeks sooner then the hens but they will soon follow.
Usually when they are chicks the "comb" ( the pink long ragged part in the middle of the chickens head) if it's taller or bigger it's a rooster if it's smaller it's a hen then usually as they age you can double check because the hens are doal and the roosters are bigger bolder and more "prettier".
Good luck!
Yes.
This is how it works:
The word: Chicken: refers to the family.
Roosters are the male chickens.
Hens are the female chickens. They lay the eggs.
Chicks are the little babies, which hatch from the eggs.

Roosters are male chickens. Also known as cockerals.
Hens are mature female chickens who lay the eggs. Younger female chickens (about under a year) are called pullets.
chicks are the babies that can come from the egg if fertilized.
other wise, you just have a yummy egg!

A red rooster is a male.
This is because female chickens are called hens.
