The strongest dog breed in the USA is somewhat subjective but the number one strongest dog on most websites is the mastiff. Second to the mastiff is the Great Dane with Rottweiler's and Irish Wolf Hounds also making the list.

Smooth Collies are and soon Rough Collies will be too, because people are so focused on breeds like the Border Collie or a lab/retriever. It seems to me people are no longer fascinated by the breed or they have simply forgotten about this wonderful dog. I own 2 Smooth Collie's.

In the USA they're probably in the terrier class. Airedales are a hunting/working dog, bred as water spaniels to hunt otters. Many of our domestic dogs come from hunting water spaniels; I have Gordon setters, the biggest of all the setters, bred (so it's said) by the Scottish Earl of Gordon. I have to keep the boy's water bowl in the bathtub because he'll attack it and spread water all over the place. Maybe he hopes to find an otter or a possibly a duck.
