It turns out that black rice is a somewhat general term, and black rice includes wild rice, along with some other varieties like forbidden rice and Indonesian black rice. As you might have guessed, all the varieties are really dark to black in color, and that speaks to the reason they are grouped under the term black rice.

(Actually wild rice is not rice at all, but a grass found in marshes. So, it is hard to imagine that wild rice could be considered a variety of black rice, since Asian black rice is actually rice. Could someone who knows what they are talking about answer this question better?)

And guess what? Rice is a grass! Rice in general, including wild rice, belong to the Poaceae family of plants classified as true grasses. They include plants such as reed, sugar cane, wheat, oat, bamboo, etc. Wild rice belongs to the Zizania aquatica species and the other rice varieties belong to the Oryza sativa. So, biologically speaking, they are cousins, but they are all grasses.

Wild rice is not actually rice, but an annual water-grass seed. It is more difficult to cultivate and harvest than rice, translating to a much higher end-user cost. In the opinion of many, the high nutritional values and flavor are worth the extra costs.

They're different members of the same plant family. Black or "Forbidden" rice belongs to the Oryza genus, while wild rice belongs to the Zizania genus. Both are members of the Poaceae, or grass family.
