First, you might already be breaking your lease. Some leases have a clause that both signees must occupy the property. Read your lease to find out.

As far as your rent responsibility, as far as the landlord is concerned, you are just as responsible for paying today as the day you moved in. Your name is on the lease, making you a party to the payments. Should the person who is left in the apartment be late or default entirely, you will be held responsible not only for 1/2 but for all the payments. (if they can't get money from one, they get it from the other)

You will also be responsible for any payments assessed because of damage done to the property at the end of the lease term.

You may want to consider speaking to the landlord about having your name removed from the lease, though they do not have to comply. The lease is a contract. You can ask them to void the lease and have the person who remained in the property sign a new lease without you on it.
