If the bike doesn't work properly, you shouldn't get in trouble for pointing it out. Just don't complain about it. That very word has a negative connotation. Explain that the bike isn't functioning properly.
If your folks got the bike from a bike shop, the shop should be able to adjust it free of charge. If they got the bike from a department store, then there's no wonder that the bike needs adjusting. Unfortunately, there's no one competent at a department store to correct the bike's problems. So the alternative to returning the bike for a refund would be to take it to a bike shop and pay to have it adjusted properly.
You just complain.
