The most celebrated Russian author, who lived in the 19th century.
He wrote "War & Peace" and "Anna-Karenina" among others.
In addition, his Christian writings, in particular, have had marked influence upon many people, adding to his overall significance historically.
Not really. Remember that Tolstoy was born a rich aristocrat but in his later life became a Communist. he gave up (voluntarily) most of his possessions, but was never destitute. He died of cold, but then he was on a journey in the Russian winter. He was buried in a pauper's grave, but that's what he wanted.
Tolstoy is the greatest novelist published to date, and one of very few contenders for the greatest writer of all time. His fame rests primarily on the masterpieces Anna Karenina and War & Peace. He was also a gifted playwright and author of short stories, and was known for his Christian theology, which advocated ascetic pacifism, and which profoundly influenced his correspondent Mohandas Gandhi.
