1. PC appears "dead"- no lights, no spinning HD or fan

Computer not booting
A faulty power supply does not supply any power at all to a computer or supplies incorrect voltages. Most of the time faulty power supplies are not serviceable and require replacement.

It may be time for a new power supply if your computer keeps shutting down at random times, or gets hot very quickly, you may want to act fast in order to keep from your computer crashing.
Connect the front panel molex's to every available connector (3-pin molex connector) Or get a new one. I am experiencing the same now.
There is at least 1 fuse in the power supply of a computer usually located at the back top of the computer case. If a short occurs in any of the computer hardware, this fuse will blow, preventing damage to the power supply.

If it is a computer power supply it is the box that gives the computer its power from the outlet.
In order to supply power supply to your computer you would need an outlet plug near your computer. Then you can plug your computer into that and necessarily, use an extension.
