What an awful lot of people do not take into account is the related issues of alcohol abuse. As if Liver Failure, Brain Damage or death from Alcohol Poisoning are not enough you may wish to consider:- lung cancer, emphysema, bronchitis, cardio-vascular disease. Alcoholics are high on the list of chronic smokers. Malnutrition, Diabetes, muscle wasting, low calcium causing brittle bones. ALcoholics neglect their diets. Drink-driving, road trauma, violence, suicide or maybe he/she realy thought they could fly their brains were so bad. The list is endless, But more than enough there I think.

After many years of drinking, a person can develop Sclerosis of the Liver, High Blood pressure, cancer of the mouth and esophagus. BPH or even prostate cancer can result. These are a few possible outcomes, there are a lot more.

Drinking alcohol in moderation is associated with better health and greater longevity than is either abstaining from alcohol or abusing it.

Drinking alcohol appears to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure among women and may reduce cardiovascular deaths among people with high blood pressure. See Related Links.

Extensive research has found that drinking alcohol in moderation significantly reduces the risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). See Related Link

On the basis of the research evidence, the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the (US) National Cancer Institute, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Mayo Clinic and other medical organizations have concluded that drinking alcohol does not increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. See Related Link.

Drinking alcohol also reduces the risk of developing kidney cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma (cancer), and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (cancer).

There are many! Liver, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, intestines, brain are all affected negatively by long term alcohol abuse. Cirrhosis of the liver comes after long term abuse. Pancreatitis and esophageal bleeds can occur too. Diabetes is not uncommon in long term alcohol abuse patients. Many who abuse alcohol long term can have withdrawal symptoms that can include the "shakes" or DT's (Delerium Tremens) and seizures.
