In a straight line, or as a Crow Flies the distance may be shorter, but birds and road builders do not work in harmony. The best route in terms of speed and comfort requires a prudent driver to head for Walsenburg and then head North on Interstate 25. A total of about 315 miles will have to be covered and the driving time will be about 6 hours. Other routes are interesting, but pack a lunch and expect a few minor delays, silly little things like avalanches, snow falls, rock slides, waash-outs and flooding do happen in the Rockies. Doubters should be required to read up on lore like Kit Carson experienced, the Donner (Dinner sounds a little offensive) party or the Alferd G. Packer saga. The mountains of Colorado should never be trifled with. Take them seriously because summer is on the Fourth of July, Fall is on the fifth, winter often begins on the sixth and spring delays itself until the third of July.
