More than 100,000 people... mostly civilians... died. 50,000 died on February 13 1945 in Dresden when that city was bombed. Iwo Jima was by far the costliest single campaign for the US, but the slaughter pales when compared to the battle of the Somme in 1915 when close to 600,000 soldiers were killed in four days.
