This has happened to me. Let me tell you this first though: don't bother looking through the instructions booklets because they provide no information on this subject. I called Nintendo when this happened to me and they said to unplug it from both the wall and the Wii and let it sit for at least five minutes. Do that, turn it back on, and it should be back to normal! If not, call Nintendo at 1-800-255-3700.

Yeah. But, you also should, if that didn't work, make sure the game disc is looking in the right direction.

Unlike the person before me, I had checked the handbook and it said it should NOT be on the floor or anywhere dusty as the air ventilation in the back of the Wii can get dust in it. (That's Bad.)

Crognet says: I did most of the above, unplugged it from the unit only (as unplugging from the wall would not make a difference, believe me) - took it out side and blew hard into the back. Loads of dust came out. Mine wasn't kept on the floor, it was stored in a hi-fi and home cinema unit. This means that we do not regularly pull everything out to dust, and the Wii has obviously been sucking it all in over time. I plugged it back in when the unit was stone cold, and all was well. I work in the industry, and suspect that the Wii must have an inbuilt fail safe to stop overheating when the fan is not functioning correctly.
