During the "Summer of Love" many options, drugs, meditation and music were used in attempts by people to expand their consciousness. When famous people tried TM, it became front page news and more people learned of it. The practice, like so many, started in Asia. It was not pushed/sold as a religious movement.The fact that all 4 of the Beatles went to India to learn/practice TM really moved it into the everyday realm. George Harrison was the only Beatle who maintained the practice during the years.
