1) Disconnect NEGATIVE battery terminal
2) Remove drive belt
- use a 3/8" drive breaker bar inserted in the square hole in the tensioner arm to rotate the arm to remove the belt (Take note as to the belt routing prior to belt removal)
3) Disconnect electrical connections from the alternator
- 1 plug on the top left side and 1 nut for the B+ on the top center
4) Remove the nut from the stud bolt (that is the rear one) and detach the coolant hose bracket
5) Remove the 3 alternator mounting bolts
6) Remove alternator
Installation is the reverse of removal. The process is fairly straight forward, and luckily everything is up top and readily accessible.

My front wheel bearings just went in my 04 mountaineer, and we tried to replace them ourselves, but in order to get to the bearings you have to have the truck up on a lift, so unfortunately we had to send it to a mechanic.
