a short story is usually something the length of a magazine article- say five to ten pages max. It is intended to be read at one setting- unlike a novel which is hundreds of pages long. the Reader"s digest attempted to bridge the gap with so-called Condensed Books- which in my opinion cheated the reader out of much meat- and often had rather sloppy chronology to get the story to (work) within a few-pages span.
