Can daffodils and narcissus leaves be cut back right after blooming?

After the daffodil/narcissus flowers have faded, the plant needs to restore the nutrients that were used, so it can bloom the next year. The leaves must remain as stay green for this to happen. It takes about 4 weeks. When the leaves begin to turn yellow, you can cut the leaves off.

∙ 16y agoNo,because the nutrients from the leaves are re-absorbed to help make next years flowers.Don't cut them back until the leaves are quite yellow,or you may not get any flowers next year.

Where and how do daffodils grow?
Daffodils can be found in what is called the "temperate zone". They need a period of cold for the flowers to bloom properly. They do well in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3-9. They can be growing wild in a meadow, pasture or lakeside, or they can be a cultivated ornamental type grown in gardens both rural and urban. Daffodils grow from a bulb. After a period of cold, when the temperature is right, it will send the new leaves and bud tipped stem above ground. The plant will live for about 10 weeks. The spent leaves will fall off and the bulb will be dormant for the rest of the year.
Why did your daffodils change from yellow to white over the years?
Many flowers like tulips, daffodils and glads were once white and the breeders crossed them to give color. In time the bulbs become old and may revert back to white. Also there is a white daffodil so if you have stored the bulbs altogether they will all become white. Here's a good idea I came up with. I use to get so frustrated because I'd have to wait for my daffodils and tulips to stop blooming, wait for the leaves to die off before I could plant my summer flowers. I came up with the idea of getting a 10" pot and I would put 3 - 4 bulbs in each pot and then bury it where I wanted it. When the daffodils and tulips were finished I simply lifted the pot right of the ground and put them on the bench in the back of our yard to die off and I was able to get my summer planting done earlier.

This prevents it from wasting its energy making seeds instead of storing food in the bulb for next year's plant. Let the leaves stay on the plant to make the food for storage - until they turn yellow and wither up.
