There is a two-step process involved.
Step One
The House of Representatives holds hearings, then votes to impeach the President.
If the House of Representatives votes in favor, by a simple majority, the House sends Articles of Impeachment to the Senate.
Step Two
The Senate conducts a trial of the President to decide if the President is guilty of the crimes charge in the Articles of Impeachment.
If two-thirds of the Senate votes to accept any Article of Impeachment, the President is automatically removed from office and the vice president takes his place and if he's the same it starts all over again. =(
Holding a hearing before the full senate
The process is popularly called "impeachment", but this is a misnomer. "Impeachment" means indictment and refers only to the first part of the procedure, which takes place in the House of Representatives. The second part is called "conviction" and can happen only after the President has already been impeached. Conviction by the Senate automatically results in removal from office.
The U. S. Senate has to find him/her guilty of the charge(s) brought by the U. S. House of Representatives.
Mr. President, you may step down now.
1. Reprimand 2. Scolding 3. Censure 4.Expulsion

The process is often called impeachment, but actually impeachment by Congress is only the first stage of the removal process. After impeachment a trial is held by the senate which hears the evidence and then votes. Two-thirds most vote for conviction in order to remove the president.
