They were used for meetings of course. Town officials gathered there and discussed laws, policies, local events, anything that was important to the town.
Charles the first launched a war on Parliament. Parliment won. A law was passed that the king/queen would stay but Parliament would be the premier political institution in England
Thomas Jefferson referred to the town meetings in New England societies as, "the best school of political liberty the world ever saw." Town meetings, where the adult males met together and each man voted, was a showcase and a classroom for democracy. New England villagers from the outset gathered regularly in their meetinghouses to elect their officials, appoint schoolmasters, and discuss such mundane matters as road repairs.
