The check engine light came on in my 2000 Chevrolet Malibu 3.2 liter V6. I reset the computer by taking battery cables loose. Why is the check engine light still on?

That would work on cars before 1995 but it will not now. The computors have more knowledge and have to be reset with a scanner.
