Well for the most part, most people that we think of as good in history truly were not as good as we want them to think. Some rulers did some good things but this comes at a price. Alexander the Great was good mainly because he is famous for the good thing that that he did. Did he keep his nation in fit and fighting shape yes. The question is a bit vague, but Alexander the great was a great military leader. His father Philip unified most of Greece (excepting Athens) and began the Hellenic period. When Alexander became king he wanted to leave a legacy of his own, so he took on Greece's main enemy, Persia. He won, and took one of the Persian princesses as his wife, and he attempted to take over Bactria (modern day Afghanistan) and failed. The Bactrians and their environment together deemed impenetrable and he decided to form a marriage alliance and married the princess Roxanne. Macedonians were polygamous so multiple marriages were normal for them. However Alexander had two wives and neither of them were Greek, so many of his subjects were unhappy with that.

In order to keep his people happy, Alexander had to adapt to his people's cultures. Dressing in Persian clothes and following Persian customs he gained the adoration of his Persian subjects and the disdain of Greeks who felt betrayed by his new persona.
