Yes, ENIAC was the first electronic digital computer (what most people refer to as "computers" today), however different sorts of mechanical computers had been developed before it.

However, ENIAC was NOT the 1st Programmable Electronic Computer! Colossus was a sophisticated programmable electronic computer developed by the Top Secret Code Breaking MK ULTRA at Bletchley Park (England's Secret Military Intelligence Decoding Unit). Colossus was built for the purposes of breaking NAZI radio transmission which had been encoded using the NAZI Lorenz cipher system. Sir Flower's First Colossus was up and running in England during 1941, about 2 years prior to invention of ENIAC. So, COLOSSUS was the world's first computer. * Colossus was the first ELECTRONIC computer. It was developed to crack the LORENZ codes the German high command was using (which was more difficult than Enigma). Until recently ENIAC was thought to be the first, but the secrecy of Colossus was finally lifted and we find it (and 9 others) were first operational in Jan 1944 while various portions of ENIAC were made operational in the period of June 1944 through October 1945.

no, Bush Differential Analyzer, ABC, Harvard Mark I, Colossus, Zuse Z3, and several others were operational before it.

ENIAC was just the first general purpose programmable electronic digital computer.

ENIAC was not the first electronic computer.

The first electronic computer was the Colossus, Bletchley Park, during WWII.

"Eniac was not the first computer, it was the 11th,"

The ABC was indeed a very early digital electronic device, but was not programmable, it was single purpose.

ENIAC was not the first electronic computer, ABC was. However ENIAC was the first programmable general purpose electronic computer.

  1. ABC: first electronic digital computer, 1942. Speed 30 additions/subtractions per second, purpose solving systems of simultaneous equations up to 29 variables. Built in Ames, Iowa; designed by Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff and built by his graduate student Clifford Berry.
  2. Colossus: first programmable electronic digital computer, 1944. Speed 25,000 characters per second, purpose breaking messages sent via german SZ42 cypher machine. A total of 11 machines were built at Bletchley Park, UK prior to VE day; designed by Tommy Flowers of the british post office research branch at Dollis Hill.
  3. ENIAC: first programmable general purpose electronic digital computer, 1946. Speed 5000 additions/subtractions per second in each of 20 accumulators, purpose computing firing tables for many new artillery pieces introduced in WW2 but in fact general purpose. Built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Army's ballistics research lab in Aberdeen.

ENIAC's top level design and some circuit design was done by J. Presper Eckert. John Mauchley was not a qualified electronics designer, but he contributed ideas that others designed circuits for. The detailed circuit design of the various different panels was performed by different engineers.

  • Robert F. Shaw (function tables)
  • Jeffrey Chuan Chu (divider/square-rooter)
  • Thomas Kite Sharpless (master programmer)
  • Arthur Burks (multiplier)
  • Harry Huskey (reader/printer)
  • Jack Davis (accumulators)

The first desktop computer was probably the DEC PDP-8 minicomputer in 1965. It came in both desktop & rackmount versions. DEC was in Maynard, Massachusetts.

Who made the ENIAC computer?

The contract for the first ENIAC system was signed on 5th June 1943 and it was constructed by John Mauchley and J. Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering from July, 1943. It was unveiled on February 14, 1946 at Penn, USA.ENIAC stands for Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator. The ENIAC was the first American digital computer in the modern sense of the word.

What computer was designed for the US Army to calculate trajectories for bombing tables?

Perhaps your thinking of ENIAC, but no ENIAC was designed for calculating artillery firing tables. Both the Norden and Sperry analog computer bombsights preceded ENIAC, but they are electromechanical not electronic. I don't know when the first electronic computer bombsight was made, but remember the Nordens were still in use in the Vietnam war! You can't use tables for bombing, the calculations must be done in real-time.
