St. Joan of Arc lived in the early 15th century, she was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431. Our Blessed Lord had no blood descendants, so Joan of Arc was a daughter and sister of the Lord as is every other female Christian.
As a child she was quiet and reserved. She saw and heard things that she did not understand fully, and probably was scared by them at first. She was more serious than other children in the village, but we know she had friends her own age. Every Saturday she made a mini-pilgrimage to the chapel of Notre Dame de Boremaunt, about 6 miles through the woods down a path that started where Domremy joins Greaux. Later, once she understood her mission, she was very driven and intense. She must have been very charismatic, since many historical figures remembered a brief meeting with her as the most memorable event in their lives. She was extremely intelligent, though not well educated. During her trial, her intellect towered over her accusers who were the most educated men in Europe at the time. Even though we know that she had weak moments of fear and doubt after long captivity and rigorous trial examinations, she met her death with ultimate grace and strength of character. Even many her accusers were converted to believers by her last moments. I have been to the spot where she died, and the weight of that moment can still be felt there. It is ironic that she is now the biggest tourist attraction and economic boon for the city of Rouen that watched her death with approval, which is also the capital of Normandy.
Joan, or Jehanne as she spelled it, was very forgiving and tolerant. She was obviously impressive had an unexpected effect on everyone she met. We don't know if this was because of her appearance, but we do know that is was partially because of her manner and personality. It is my belief that she must have been very beautiful, even stunningly so. This is the only way to explain why so many powerful men were so respectful and immediately subserviant to her despite the fact that she was very young, uneducated, inexperienced, and from a very rural and unimportant village. She never contradicted herself. She carried her faith on her shoulder and was never ashamed to proclaim it. She loved her Lord and her church, even though the church in its politically skewed form was her accuser and final demise. She was arguably the most famous person of her time while she was alive, and the most famous woman in history.
