Augustus was thirty six when he became the ruler of Rome formally. This was younger that the age of 40 (for patricians) or 42 (for plebeians) which was the age of eligibility to the consulship (the consuls were the two annually elected heads of the Republic) in the Late republic. However, before Sulla established this rule in 81 BC one could become a consul at the age of thirty.
